The idea of decentralisation is one of the biggest dreams of libertarian people. The libertarian developers behind Monero took this idea a step further. They implemented a primary feature: privacy.

It all began in 18 April 2014, when Monero was launched under the name of BitMonero (Monero means coin in Esperanto language). The name was used for only 5 days, because the community voted for the name to be shortened in Monero. The launch occurred right after the first fork of CryptoNote currency Bytecoin with two major differences. You can find more details about the features of Monero here and here.

Please take in consideration that Monero price in US$ is strongly influenced by Bitcoin price.

Monero was listed on CoinMarketCap on May 21st 2014 and the price was established around 0.00502122 Bitcoin (2.47$ at that time). After only 1 month the price peaked at 0.00842965 Satoshi (5.03$). As you can see, the price increased by almost 69% despite the fact that Bitcoin gained more than 100$.

After this record, Monero price was in downtrend for several months, settling around 0.001 BTC. Monero it is a surprising cryptocoin and right after everyone lost their faith in it, in February 2015 the price started to increase day by day reaching at 0.004 BTC (1.01$).

However, after this new high of 2015, Monero crashed again. This time, a new support was formed at 0.002 BTC that lasted until the end of September 2015 when the price crashed transforming the support into resistance. From September 2015 and February 2016 the price of Monero was bouncing between 0.001 BTC and 0.0015 BTC.

It may be a coincidence, but again, in the middle of February 2016 the trend was moving up reaching at 0.004 BTC (1.65$) on March 25th 2016. After less than two months (May 15) 1 Monero was established at 0.002 BTC. After this price map of Monero jumping from 0.001 BTC until 0.004 BTC, on 20 August 2016 Monero broke the resistance of 0.004 BTC. On 3 September 2016 Monero jumped to 0.024 BTC (14.12$). A new all time high was established back then.

From that moment, Monero never went under 4$, reaching highs in US$, but never exceeded the all time high in BTC (XMR = 0.02455281 BTC), for now.
